CHATHAM COMMUNITY LIBRARY
The Friends of the
Pittsboro Memorial Library are supporting the planning and
construction of the new Chatham Community Library. The new facility
will be a 25,000 square foot, joint public/community college library
located at the Pittsboro Campus of the Central Carolina Community
College. It will also be the headquarters library for the Chatham
County Library system.
Chatham County is providing funding for the
construction and furnishings. The Friends of the Library has
initiated a capital campaign to raise funds from individuals,
businesses and organizations to provide enhancements to the new
building. See our
Donation Form
The library project has been on
hold due to the national credit situation, but we have
encouraging news! The new projected schedule indicates that
construction is to begin in September 2009. See the
Chatham County's
website
for updates and information.
“Community Read 2009:
Exploring Our Shared
Racial History”
This series of book discussions and events
co-sponsored by The Friends of the Library and McIntyre’s Fine Books
in Fearrington will take place between March and November and will
present a thought provoking look at the history of the American
struggle for racial equality in Chatham County and the South in
general --and the impact it has on our lives today.
The two books which will serve as focal points of
discussion are The Help by Kathryn Stockett, and
Blood Done Sign My Name by Tim Tyson. Both take place
in the sixties and the seventies when small towns in the South were
barely touched by the civil rights movement, and present the issues
from different perspectives.
